Historical Anatomy Images: Jacopo Berengario da Carpi, Isagogae breues, 1523

This post presents selected public domain historical anatomy images from Jacopo Berengario da Carpi’s Isagogae breues, perlucidae ac uberrimae in anatomiam humani corporis, a historical anatomical work preserved in the U.S. National Library of Medicine collection. The work is listed in NLM Historical Anatomies on the Web as published in Bologna by Benedictus Hector in 1523.

Jacopo Berengario da Carpi was an important figure in the history of anatomy and anatomical illustration. His work belongs to the early modern period of anatomical teaching, when printed anatomical books and woodcut illustrations played an increasingly important role in medical education.

The images in this post include historical anatomical woodcuts related to human musculature, the skeleton, the heart, the brain, the spine, the limbs, and other anatomical structures. These images are shared here as part of the AnatomyLogia visual archive for educational, historical, and anatomical illustration purposes.

These images should not be used as a substitute for modern anatomical references. Instead, they are presented as historical visual materials that help us understand the development of anatomical illustration, medical education, and the visual representation of the human body in the sixteenth century.
